WELCOME TO DISHA
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology of serving the unprivileged, Disha is a voluntary organization working for socio-economic development of urban and rural communities by working on education, health, employment, human rights, advocacy, peace and women’s empowerment. Disha works with civil societies and corporate to find lasting solutions to such problems at the individual and community level.
Since 1992, Disha's initiatives have helped people of sixteen slum clusters of Delhi and 100 villages in Bihar and U.P. on the path of self-reliance, dignity, justice and empowerment.
Education
Virendra KumarWatching children studying at schools near his slum, Virendra dreamt of following their suit and going to school. Unfortunately, being a daily wage labor to a contractor, his father could not afford his education. He lives in a small room in Dhobi Basti with a family of 7. His home is a temporary establishment provided by the contractor. Virendra seemed to have no choice but to follow the steps of his father to become a labor himself.
After getting associated with Disha, Virendra has connected with his dreams of studying at school. Today he dreams of becoming a teacher rather than a laborer. At Disha, we believe that each one of us can be the catalyst to a positive change. Each of us can lend a hand in the formation of educated India.
Rain Water Harvesting
40 years old Wafatan Khatun lives with her husband Mohd. Fekuddin-Ansari and their six children. A small broken road leads to her village which is situated 3 km in the west from Tikuna Farm. Village Badgaha comprises of people from different communities.
Her family’s livelihood is dependent on farming and making incense sticks. She did not have any source of water at home and had to travel a long to get water. The long time spent in collecting water use to hamper their incense making activity which in turn affected their income.
DISHA organized meetings with the villagers of Badgaha where people were given information on RWH and also on the whole process of rainwater harvesting. When she heard that under the initiative 50 tanks would be constructed free of cost in her village Wafatan Khatun was quick to approach DISHA and now she has a 2000 liter water tank in her home which once filled with rainwater lasts for 10-15 days. She says-
“This technique has not only helped me in solving water problem but has also added significantly in my family income. Even in dry season this tanks helps me a lot as by paying ten rupees I get filled it up so it has added convenience”.
