Open schools for slum children and skill training for youth Supported by Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) under the CSR initiative

DISHA is a NGO working for socio-economic development of urban and rural communities. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology of serving the downtrodden, poorest of the poor and marginalized sections, DISHA works with children, adolescents, women and their families in the area of education, health, gender equity, skill development, Self-Help Groups, micro finance, water management, sanitation, livelihood, peaceful conflict resolution for restoring justice, dignity and human rights. These development programs are based on the felt needs of people with an effort to mobilize participation for their individual and community development.

 

objectives:

The main area of intervention is through educational inputs up to primary levels in open schools set up in the respective slum clusters for easy accessibility. These are functional for four hours and the teachers are from the local area. Thirty working children have been enrolled in the National Institute for Open schooling (NIOS) and are being prepared to study for class III, V and VIII classes.

 
Accomplishment/Achievements :
  614 children of age group 4-14 years studying in ten open classes
  90 youth trained in photography and making household linen
  Two trainings held with 80 children in creative arts
  Two trainings held in adolescent reproductive health with 80 youth
  Six health check up camps held with 368 children
  Sixty students enrolled in NIOS for class III, V and VIII
