Introduction
The tailoring skill development program was initiated to empower women and youth by equipping them with employable skills in fashion technology and garment-making through a three-month course based on the syllabus provided by the Akshaya Dhaga program. This initiative aims to foster financial independence and self-reliance, especially among underprivileged communities.
Program Overview
Center 1: Nangal Raya, New Delhi
Located in Nangal Raya, New Delhi, this center trains 25 trainees over a 3-month program focused on the basics of tailoring. The curriculum includes essential skills such as cutting, stitching, and fabric handling, along with machine operation techniques. The program is designed to build a strong foundation in garment-making, enabling participants—especially women—to pursue self-employment, take up tailoring jobs, or start small businesses. Through hands-on training, the center empowers individuals with practical skills for economic independence.
Center 2: Sevagram, Wardha, Maharashtra
Located in Sevagram, Wardha, Maharashtra, this center offers a 3-month training program for 25 trainees, focusing on the fundamentals of tailoring. The course covers key skills including cutting, stitching, fabric handling, and sewing machine operation. It is tailored to provide participants—primarily women—with the practical knowledge needed to enter the garment industry or start their own tailoring ventures. By emphasizing hands-on learning and self-reliance, the program plays a vital role in promoting economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods in the local community.

From early struggles in a small village near Kothrud, Maharashtra, Ranjana was married at 18 due to her family’s financial difficulties. Despite this, she pursued tailoring training at DISHA Nangal Raya center and has since become self-reliant by stitching and contributing to her family’s income. 2) Laxmi Kakade:
At 38, Laxmi, a homemaker from Maharashtra, rekindled her dreams after receiving sewing training from DISHA. Married at 18, she had set aside her ambitions but is now confident and preparing to start her own business.
3) Priti:
A 21-year-old Sanskrit Honours graduate from a modest background, Priti joined DISHA’s tailoring program to gain practical skills. Passionate about teaching, she aspires to blend her academic knowledge with vocational skills for community impact.
4) Dipika Verma:
At 35, Dipika found renewed purpose through DISHA’s stitching training, supported by her family. She now earns an income and supports her household with dignity.
5) Purnima Singh:
Having left graduation due to early marriage, Purnima now supports her family by stitching clothes locally after training with DISHA.
6) Bhawani Devi:
Married at 19 with limited education, Bhawani gained confidence and skills through DISHA, transforming hardship into hope.
7) Pushpa Devi:
Despite early marriage and family challenges, Pushpa pursued tailoring training and is now self-reliant, securing a future for her children.
8) Farha:
Forced to leave school after 10th grade, Farha empowered herself with tailoring skills through DISHA and is now a role model in her community.
9) Neha:
Neha, 23, overcame early adversity due to family struggles and through skill training now supports herself and inspires others.

From a conservative family background, Rozina gained financial independence and social confidence after completing DISHA’s stitching program.
